"Following a disciplined review of Petsense, we've decided to close approximately 75 underperforming stores," Tractor Supply President and CEO Hal Lawton said on the company's second-quarter earnings call this summer. When The Henderson News reported the plan on August 3, it named six affected Texas stores: Henderson, Brownwood, Fort Worth, Uvalde, Kingsville and Magnolia.
The Henderson store is Petsense by Tractor Supply at 2127 US Highway 79 South. It sold pet food and supplies and offered grooming and training in the same building. After it closes, the food part of that errand stays on Highway 79 South. Grooming in town has to fit into weekday hours, and a Saturday grooming appointment means driving to Longview. For households in Pecan Creek Estates and the rest of south Henderson, that schedule matters more than the store's address.
Nobody has published a final closing day for the Henderson store, so a little arithmetic helps. Here's the timeline from the reporting:
As of today, October 2, we haven't found any report confirming a last day for the Henderson store or saying when its grooming ends. In August, The Henderson News told customers to check the Petsense website or ask at their local store for updates, and that's still the best way to find out. If your dog has a standing grooming appointment there, now is a good time to ask about it.
This is part of a bigger change at the company. The closures affect more than a third of Petsense's 209 stores in 23 states, and Tractor Supply says the savings will go back into its core stores and its other pet businesses, VIP Petcare and Allivet. Petsense will keep its other stores, but Henderson's is closing.
Shopping for food changes the least. Tractor Supply Co. at 2307 Highway 79 South is on the same corridor as the Petsense store. It carries pet food along with livestock feed and farm supplies. It's also open longer. Posted hours are 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday through Saturday and 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Sunday. A Sunday evening bag of kibble is still a short trip on a familiar road.
The second option is local. Henderson Ranch and Feed at 1400 Lone Star Street is listed under Feed Stores in the Henderson Area Chamber of Commerce directory. The listing doesn't say whether it stocks dog and cat food or what its hours are. If your pet eats a particular formula, call 903-722-2077 before you plan around it.
Grooming is the part of the errand that changes the most. Two Henderson businesses list grooming, and both publish weekday schedules.
Lone Star Grooming is at 110 South Marshall Street. Its booking page lists hours of 7:30 a.m. to noon, Monday through Friday, and shows it closed on Saturday and Sunday. That's four and a half hours a day, five days a week, and it all happens before lunch. For anyone with a weekday job, a drop-off probably means stopping on the way to work. The shop's phone number is (903) 722-2137, and its page shows a customer review dated September 24, 2026, so the listing looks current.
Henderson Animal Care Hospital is farther along the same highway at 3462 US Highway 79 South, and its posted weekday hours are 7:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Its boarding and grooming page lists prices for basic services. For full grooming, it asks you to call.
| Service at Henderson Animal Care Hospital | Posted price |
|---|---|
| Cat bath | $24.50 |
| Dog bath, under 30 lbs | $25.25 |
| Dog bath, over 100 lbs | $33.75 |
| Light to severe brush-out | $10 to $25 |
| Deshedding, under 30 lbs to over 100 lbs | $66.75 to $109.25 |
| Nail trim | $15 |
| Nail trim with file | $29 |
These prices also show how charges scale with size. A bath for a dog over 100 pounds costs $8.50 more than a bath for a dog under 30 pounds. Deshedding costs $42.50 more across the same range. If you have a big, double-coated dog, that's the cost difference to plan for.
A veterinary hospital also gives you something a retail grooming counter can't, and that's boarding in the same building. Henderson Animal Care Hospital boards dogs and cats year-round. Staff supervise the animals, a veterinarian oversees their care, and there's a shaded exercise yard. Pets get Science Diet at mealtimes, or you can bring their food from home. Daily boarding costs $22 for pets 30.9 pounds and under, $25 from 31 to 60.9 pounds, $28 from 61 to 100 pounds, and $32 above that. Each rate goes up $5 if your pet needs medication. All boarders must be current on vaccinations and free of intestinal and external parasites, so a last-minute holiday booking can depend on whether your records are up to date. The number to call is (903) 657-9212.
Of the grooming options we could verify, the weekend appointments are in Longview.
Petco Central Longview is at 405 West Loop 281. The store is open 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday through Saturday and 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Sunday, and it offers full-service grooming for dogs and cats. The grooming salon keeps shorter hours than the store, 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Saturday and 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Sunday. If you're heading out late on a Sunday, the store will still be open after the salon has closed.
Hounds Inn Lounge at 1300 Spring Hill Road in Longview offers dog boarding, daycare, bathing and grooming. Daycare runs 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. on weekdays and 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday. We didn't find a dog daycare in Henderson in our research, so for now, that's the closest daycare we've confirmed.
Here's how the week looks with these options:
There are a few things we couldn't confirm. We didn't find a self-serve dog wash operating in the Henderson area. Petco Central Longview's service list includes grooming, training, vaccinations and aquatics, but not a self-serve wash. Apart from the feed store listing, we also didn't find a current listing for a locally owned pet supply shop. If you know of a groomer, a mobile bather, or a small shop that should be on this list, Henderson's pet owners would benefit from hearing about it.
Our best advice is to call Petsense this week about your dog's next appointment. If you need to switch, call the new groomer before your usual day comes around.
Helping a neighbor find a new groomer or figure out where the feed run goes now is part of living in a small town, and it matters to me as much as any closing table. If the Petsense change has you rethinking your weekly routine or anything else about life on Henderson's south side, I'm always glad to talk it through. Jennifer Ellis is just a call away.
